The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is a Canada-wide system
that has been designed to provide employers and workers guidelines to identify and
safely manage hazardous workplace materials. It is legislated by both the federal
and provincial jurisdictions and it emphasizes the fact that workers have the right
to know. Under this system, employers and suppliers can provide information regarding
hazardous materials in three ways:
- Labels on containers of all hazardous materials
- Materials safety data sheets (MSDS) providing detailed hazard and precautionary information
about all materials
- Worker education programs explaining how to use the hazardous material information.
This course is designed for workers who have to handle hazardous products in workplaces.
This course will help workers safely manage hazardous products to ensure their safety
and health. It has been designed to meet the minimum requirements of the WHMIS Regulations
(Regulation 860/90) and is designed to provide information to employers and employees
"those exposed to or likely to be exposed to a hazardous material in the workplace"
shall be trained.
All employees who are working with hazardous material must be trained and "likely
to be exposed to" could include the presence of hazardous materials in the workplace
could impact everyone in the workplace if there was a fire, evacuation, chemical
spill leak or emission etc. It is up to employer to determine training requirements
in consultation with the "worker health and safety rep or Joint Health and Safety
Committee".
